In the past, Cal Cruthlow had a different opinion with Quartararo and said that Yamaha didn’t need top-end power. According to Cal, the inferior power of the M1 is not the main issue that needs to be updated immediately. “We don’t need more manpower. Trust me. I know what other manufacturers are doing. How many Newton meters [of torque] do they use when exiting the corner. We use more and the engine is not smooth. So we need to move towards performance a smoother motor.” . . How about now? It doesn’t seem to have changed much.
Speaking on the MotoGP podcast OMG! , Cal Crutchlow bluntly emphasized that electronic devices are a major problem in Yamaha M1: “Yeah, they need power – that’s for sure. But they only need it in fourth, fifth and sixth gear at the end of the straight. I think it took me a long time to explain to Yamaha that in order to gain power we created so many problems in the corners that at the end of the straight we were slower than before.”
“Because the motor spins. Electronic devices are the biggest problem today – the way our electronic devices work can’t handle the power we have. So we were slow at the end of the straight.”
Furthermore, Crutchlow noted that the Yamaha had lost the good cornering performance it once had: “The other thing I also said is that there are 15 corners on each circuit. We have to get back to being able to pass corners as well as before. Because if you are 0.1 seconds faster per corner, that’s [a total of] 1.5 seconds. [Temporary] Your loss on a straight line is 0.2 seconds/0.3 seconds. Yes, you need strength to be able to fight, that’s for sure”
“There are a lot of differences in the philosophies of things, but that’s what unites them. We put wings on the bike, we did a lot of different things so some things worked, some didn’t. We’ll have to try, but I think going forward, I’m confident they’re headed in the right direction. It will just take longer.”
